Christmas Wreaths

Christmas Wreaths

As florists, Christmas is a special time for us and at Magnolia, one of the items we love making for our customers is Christmas door wreaths, but why do we hang a wreath on our doors at Christmas?

Well, they look nice and inviting and for most of us it's as traditional as buying a turkey and decorating trees, but why is this something we do each year?

THE HISTORY

The term wreath derives from the old English word "writhen," which means to twist, as in a circle or wheel. Wreaths were later adopted by the Christian faith and are used to commemorate the Advent season.

The wreath, when hung on a door or a window, has been interpreted as an invitation to the Christmas spirit to enter the home and bring good fortune, implying that the Christmas spirit dwells within

WHAT CAN WE USE?

For a wreath frame, the materials used are usually, a wired frame covered in either moss or straw or willow twisted into a circle. Traditionally we use evergreens to make wreaths. They are the most obvious option to use because other foliage has died off during winter, and they are also long-lasting and will stay fresh longer than most foliage. In the UK we have an abundance of foliage, gorgeous holly with its jewel-coloured berries, a vast assortment of evergreen trees, conifers, pines, yews, and ivy, lots and lots of ivy with its gorgeous berries, beautiful shiny laurel leaves, and an assortment of ferns and berries, which make rich pickings for a beautiful wreath. Evergreen also symbolises the continuity of life and nature; it signals the arrival of spring and new growth, and berries represent fertility. The wreath is also said to represent the wheel of the year, implying that the darkness and cold of winter will eventually pass. This is comforting to consider as the darkest day of the year approaches.
