This March as well as celebrating our wonderful mothers we are also honouring Bees. We owe so much to these amazing insects, they are responsible for much of the food that we eat, as they are the main pollinators of many of the fruits, vegetables and nuts that form part of our diets. One simple thing we can all do to help is to plant some bee-friendly flowers and at Magnolia the Florist, we will be adding a packet of wildflower seeds to all our flower orders being delivered or collected during March. (as long as stocks last)
The seeds are a special bee-friendly mix, with over 30 different types of wildflowers, each has been carefully selected to attract bees. Just sprinkle the seeds thinly on soil or compost. You can sow the seeds in your garden, borders, pots, a park, or a window box. Just keep watering so the soil is damp and the first green shoots should appear. The seeds will flower from June until the end of September. So if you have received a packet of seeds then please sow them so you can have a little bee-friendly flower patch to feed your local bees.
There are many reasons why we should look after Bees as the main threat to these insects are from Humans. Pesticides, herbicides, and monoculture farming practices are all contributing to the decline of bee populations around the world. This is a serious issue, as bees are essential for the preservation of our planet and our health. We must be aware of the importance of bees and do our best to protect them. One way is to plant bee-friendly flowers and create habitats in our gardens and communities.
