HOW TO KEEP YOUR PLANTS ALIVE WHEN YOU GO ON HOLIDAY
Time for that long-awaited holiday, tickets booked, pet care organised, travel plans sorted, but what about your plants, there is nothing worse than coming back from your holiday only to find your lovely plants are dried out, wilted and missing leaves. You can't take them with you (Seriously, don't) so here are a few simple tips to keep your plants sufficiently watered while you are away.
IF IT'S WINTER, DON'T WORRY
The first thing to remember is that if you're going away in late autumn or winter your plants are likely to be dormant, so a week or so without care won’t bother them too much.
WATER THOROUGHLY BEFORE YOU LEAVE
Just before your holiday, check plants and remove any dead leaves and flowers then give plants really good water before you leave. Let them drain off fully - they won’t like sitting in water.
MOVE YOUR PLANTS OUT OF THE SUN
If your plant is in a sunny and warm spot, move them away so they are still in plenty of light but aren’t exposed to too much heat. Your plant will lose water more quickly through evaporation and faster drinking.
GET SOME HYDRO SPIKES
Hydro Spikes are nifty little gadgets you fill with water and then stick in your plant’s soil. Your plants will suck up the water as they need it and are ideal for plants that require more constant watering like ferns.
HUDDLE THEM TOGETHER
For plants that are in well-draining pots, place a damp towel in a bath, group your plants together and place them on the towel, this will help keep the air around them moist and create their own little microclimate. They can also chat with each other while you’re away.
WICKING METHOD
A little DIY trick is to fill a glass or vase with water, pop it next to your plant, get a length of cotton rag or rope, and put one end in the water and the other end a couple of inches into the plant’s soil. Your plant will then absorb the water as it needs it. If you are lucky enough to have received one of our hand tides the cotton handles on the gift box are perfect to use for this method.
