Sunflowers for a Stylishly Stormy August Wedding

Dean and the Magnolia team love a good wedding! Summer is always a busy season for weddings in Northamptonshire; with rolling countryside, grand country houses and rustic wedding barns there is a unique venue perfect for any style of event. Our florist shop in the heart of Kettering is always full of blooms for wedding inspiration, and our stylish wedding flowers are well known around the local area - we love making people smile with our creative floral designs!

On a dramatically stormy Saturday in August one of our happy couples Bernadette and Ian tied the knot. We give you a sneak peak behind the scenes of the venue, surviving the summer weather and of course the wedding flowers! Got a question about planning your wedding flowers? The Wedding Venue

The bride and groom had chosen the magical setting of Elms Meadow, a secluded spot located on a working farm in Pytchley. It is conveniently close to Northampton, Kettering, Wellingborough and Corby so easy for local suppliers and guests to reach.

With stunning views across the rolling hills and wildflower meadows, it offers a versatile outdoor space with a charming rustic feel. Elms Meadow has four interlinked Nordic style giant tipis providing an intimate space and blank canvas to create a unique wedding setting.

The ceremony was held outside with wooden benches for guests to perch upon, and accessorised with hay bales, wood stumps and flowers. We fashioned rustic floral displays to decorate the benches and help create a colourful aisle for the bride. At the front, with the rolling countryside as the back drop, was the romantic flower arch under which the bride and groom exchanged their vows.

The Wedding Flowers

Bernadette and Ian were a fab couple to work with! From the moment they stepped in to our florist shop in Kettering they radiated happiness and love – a feeling Dean knew he wanted to capture in their wedding flowers.

The happy couple mentioned in their initial wedding consultation that they loved the idea of incorporating sunflowers in to their special day. Dean and the team began the design stage, keeping in mind Sunflowers and the rustic countryside wedding style. When working with an outside setting, it is important to consider the colour and size of the wedding flowers – they need to ‘pop’ and stand out in such a vast space.

To create the wedding flowers, our design team used a gorgeous mix of carefully sourced blooms; Sonja sunflowers, Sun orange sunflowers, gyp, White Avalanche roses, Akito roses, tanacetum and yellow alstroemeria.

Sunflowers make beautiful wedding flowers – sturdy to work with, vibrant colours and make a striking statement. Sunflowers are very seasonal blooms, at their finest peak in August and September months. Available in a range of sizes and yellow/orange shades, Sunflowers are the perfect choice for a relaxed and happy summer wedding vibe.

The Weather

The English weather was perhaps not on our side! A stormy few days meant gusty winds and a dark skies – even putting the flower arch in place we were worried it wouldn’t survive the day. We did have a back up plan in place just in case, but luckily our sturdy arch looked fabulous all day.

The dark skies actually added a magical touch of drama to the setting though, with the bright sunflowers really popping against the grey background. We can’t wait to see the professional photographer images and the colours and smiles captured from the special day.
